FAQs

Are the cattle grass-fed and grass finished?

Yes! It is pasture based and grass-finished. This is different from most grocery store beef and many ranch to consumer direct beef. Most grass fed meat at the store is not 100% grass-fed. They are grass-fed grain finished. We are 100% grassfed. Our cows are also not grown in a feedlot and fed corn.

Are your cows vaccinated with the MRNA vaccine?

No. So far no mRNA vaccines are not approved for use in cattle by the USDA.

Do you use hormones or antibiotics?

No hormones are added and the cattle are not continuously fed low dose antibiotics in their feed like many feed lot fattened cattle.

What are the freezer space needs?

You should plan one cubic foot of freezer space to hold about 35 pounds of beef. For a quarter you'll need about 6 cubic feet, a half 12 cubic feet and a whole 24 cubic feet.

What cuts and how much weight are in a standard quarter, half and a whole?

For a typical mixed quarter (approximately 100-140 lb of packaged beef, depending on carcass size), you can generally expect something close to:

Cut Approximate Proportion
Ground beef 45-55%
Steaks 20-25%
Roasts 20-25%
Other cuts (short ribs, stew meat, soup bones, brisket, shanks, etc.) 5-10%

A representative quarter from Bear Mountain’s standard cut might include:

  • Ribeye steaks
  • New York strip or T-bone/Porterhouse (depending on how the carcass is divided)
  • Sirloin steaks
  • Chuck roasts
  • Arm roast
  • Rump roast
  • Round roast
  • Brisket (or part of one)
  • Short ribs
  • Stew meat
  • Soup bones
  • A substantial amount of ground beef
